Looking Back
It was in 1750 when the village literally appeared on the map as Turfins. There are various suggestions as to how the name Torphins came about, with one attractive idea that it was named after Thorfinn Sigurdsson or Thorfinn the Mighty, Macbeth’s cousin. But it’s more likely to have come from the Gaelic term torr fions, which translate to white hills, a reference to the Hill Fare, located east of the village.
It wasn’t until the mid 1800s when the extremely small settlement grew, due in part of the arrival of the Deeside Railway, linking Aberdeen to Ballater. When its operations stopped in 1996, the population declined, but picked up again in the 1970s, during the boom of the North Sea oil. Today, there are only around 1300 people living in Torphins, which gives you an idea on how really small the past settlement was. Nonetheless, a majority of its residents are wealthy people working in the oil industry in Aberdeen. The population also shows how quiet and peaceful this village can be.
