History
Evidence of large-scale Mesolithic nut shelling was found in a midden pit at Staosnaig in 1995. The pit was a large, shallow one that was full of hundreds of thousands of burned hazelnut shells. Although there have been hazelnuts found in other Mesolithic sites, never have they been found in abundance in just one pit. The nuts were carbon dated and they traced back to around 7000 BC.

The lairds of the island during the 18th century were the Macneils. Colonsay House was built by the Mcneil family in 1722, and since 1904 it has been the property of the Barons Strathcona.
