Flower Delivery to Bellingdon with Clare Florist
Bellingdon is a village located in the civil parish of Chartridge, and in the county of Buckinghamshire, in the southeast of England. The name Bellingdon is derived from an Anglo Saxon name Bellingdenu, which means Bella’s Valley. It’s also been recorded as Belenden during the 15th century.
The village has been built on a ridge of the Chiltern Hills, which is formed of a chalk escarpment. A greater portion of the Chiltern Hills was designated as an “Area of Outstanding Beauty” in 1965.
Bellingdon consisted of a large number of farms until the 19th century. The names of some of these included: Huge Farm, Bank, Vale, Bloomfield, and Bellingdon End. All of these had been built from between the 16th to the 17th centuries. The buildings of these farms were built with brick, made with the clay deposits of the land.
Several brickworks companies utilized this clay, and many businesses were created between the 19th and the 20th centuries. Some of these brickworks companies were located at Bloomfield Farm, Gyles Court, and Cheddington Wood.
St. John’s Church is located in the centre of the village. It was built in 1901, though the Anglican congregation met at other locations from the 1870s, onwards. The church was officially named “St. John’s” in 1958, after St. John the Evangelist.
There used to be a Baptist meeting in the village at Peppett’s Green. Peppett’s Farm used to be owned by the Lower Baptist Church, but this was sold in the 1920s.
In 1914, the author D.H. Lawrence rented one of the Bellingdon Farm cottages. He wrote “The Rainbow” at this location, between August 1914 to January 1915.
The first village hall was built in Bellingdon about 1948. Miss Marian Thompson was the first W.I. (Women’s Institute) President, and she gave the land for the hall. The National Council for Social Service was responsible for the construction of the standard hut building.
The village hall is adjacent to playing fields, which are shared with the residents of Asheridge hamlet. In 2010, the village received a grant so that a playground could also be constructed next to the village hall.
At the northern side of the village is an old building, which used to be the Bull Public House. It shut down in the the summer of 2009, and the building has not been repurposed since then.
The largest employer in the village today is HG Matthews Brickworks, carrying on the village’s best industry. The Matthews family purchased this business in 1924.
There are no schools in the village. Children must head to the market town of Chartridge or the other surrounding villages for classes. The village does have one shop, Bellingdon End, which sells equestrian supplies, animal feed, and clothing.
