Flower Delivery to Glinton with Clare Florist
Glinton is a village located around six miles to the north of the city of Peterborough in the county of Cambridgeshire. It has grown at a steady rate over the years; it had a population of 1,660 people in 1991, which grew to 3,130 people 20 years later in 2001. One of the best things about Glinton is that the A15 (aka the Peterborough bypass) separates it from the “urban sprawl” of the city, allowing the village to retain its rural character while ensuring that it has good transport connections to London and Cambridge.
The History of Glinton
No one is really sure where the village got its name. It may have come from the Old English word “glente” (which means “lookout place”), the Middle Low German word “glinde” (which means “fence” or “enclosure”), or the Old Danish word “klint” (which means “hill”). It may also mean “village on the Glym brook”, which refers to Brook Drain.
There is evidence that the village was settled by humans 7,000 years ago during the Mesolithic age. Archaeologists have also unearthed field systems that date back to the Iron Age as well as excellently preserved well and a farm complex that were built during the Roman times. Glinton was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and, at the time, most of the land in the village was owned by the Peterborough Abbey. Near the end of the 13th century, the village was considered to be one of the richest manors of the Abbey.
Modern Glinton
Glinton has grown to become a pleasant and self-supporting community that has retained its rural charm. It’s a great place to visit for those who live in London and want to take a short break.
When you spend some time in Glinton, make sure to visit St Benedict’s Church. It’s considered to have one of the finest needle spires in all of England, bested only by Salisbury Cathedral, so take the time to admire its spire and maybe even take pictures! The church is also the subject of the poem “Glinton Spire”, which was written by John Clare. Clare was educated in the church, which later became the burial place of his sweetheart Mary Joyce.
If you visit Glinton in September, you might be able to catch the Glinton Horticultural Society Annual Show. The show usually takes place in the middle of September and lets you view a wide range of Glinton flowers and flower arrangements as well as various herbs, vegetables, and other produce. During the event, you’ll also get to interact with the locals, particularly those who love gardening and raising their own plants.
While you’re at it, why not send flowers to Glinton while visiting the village with your loved ones? It’s a great way to delight your mum during Mother’s Day or surprise your wife during your wedding anniversary. There’s no need to worry since you can easily order flowers in Glinton from us.
