Flower Delivery to Orwell with Clare Florist

Orwell is a small village located in the southeastern portion of England, located in south Cambridgeshire, and has a small population of around 1000 people. Orwell has the distinction of being situated where the Prime Meridian passes through, along the eastern side of the village.

The name Orwell is derived from a work meaning “well”. It’s also the name of an old Roman road that is located beside the village, and joins up to Cambridge. In the Domesday book of 1086, Orwell is named “Ordeuuella”. There is a variation in old English, “Ord Wella”. The village’s name means “a spring by a pointed hill”.

There is no pointed hill in the region, but there are two possibilities. The hill in question may be a natural hill located behind St. Andrews Church. There are records showing that there also used to be a manmade hill that was pointed, and was on the site of where St. Andrews Church now is. There is a drawing on the map with a spring emerging from the foot of the hill. There is no dating on the map, and it’s possible it was made for religious purposes.

Within the side of the natural hill near the church is a site of excavation, where they removed clunch. This is a chalky limestone rock which was popular for use in eastern England buildings. The benefit of this material is that it is softer after it’s been removed from the ground, and then it hardens up over time when exposed to the elements. This hill is now covered in wildflowers, and a popular grazing site for some rare breeds of sheep.

From on top of “The Clunch Pit”, as it’s called locally, one has some wonderful views of three different counties in England. The hill is located about two hundred feet above the village of Orwell. Within the hill are also two caves.

Some of the oldest buildings in Orwell date back to the 16th century. The Malton Farm still remains, which was originally considered within the village of Malton, but became a part of the parish of Orwell after the late 18th century. The village has traditionally been a centre of agriculture, but did have a coprolite mine for a time during the end of the 19th century. These fossils were mined to make fertilizer.
St. Andrews Church was founded around 1150 AD, but the structure remaining today bears little resemblance to the original building. The church has a tower which was added in 1250. The entire church has had extensive repairs with brick over the years. One of the most notable artifacts found during restoration is a crucifixion sculpture from about 1300 BC.

Orwell is a hub for all of the surrounding villages. Villagers from around the counties gather together for many events throughout the year.
