Flower Delivery to Lampeter with Clare Florist
Lampeter is a town in the western portion of Ceredigion, Wales. It has a small population of around 3000 people. It’s located between the joining of the two rivers Afon Dulas and River Teifi. This town is the third largest in Ceredigion, with Cardigan and Aberystwyth being larger.
Lampeter is known as “the smallest university town” in the UK. The population of the university adds about 1000 people. The University of Wales was formed in 1852 by Bishop Burgess of St. David. It was a solution to provide training for men wishing to join the Anglican priesthood. In 1852, a Bachelor of Divinity could be earned. In 1865, a student could earn a Bachelor of Liberal Arts. It belonged to the University of Wales until 2008. In 1850, the university started a rugby team, resulting in the first rugby team for Wales.
Lampeter has a long and interesting record. There used to be a Norman castle called Pont Steffan (Stephen’s Bridge), on the River Teifi, until 1187. It was then destroyed by Owain Gwynedd, King of North Wales, as he conquered the region. When the university was built, the ruins of the castle became the foundation for C.R. Cockerell’s college building, which still remains today.
Edward I had established the Cardiganshire royal county in 1282. Despite this, the Welsh language and culture survived.
In 1284, a charter was granted for the town to hold a weekly market. In the centuries ahead, there were as many as eight fairs held each year in the town, including the Dalis Horse Fair. The Fair had originally been held in Dihewdy, but once the railway was built to Lampeter, it was moved there. This fair was last held in 1939.
Lampeter was notorious for its festivals in the 18th century. There were many drunken parties held in town that resulted in violence. Many people had to be put into stocks during the events.
Today, there are still many festivals held each year in Lampeter. In May is the Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival, held at the University. The Lampeter Food Festival is held every year in July. The West Lampeter Community Fair is held in September, and the Lampeter Stallion Show in March. The Eisteddfod has a popular musical competition for people under age 30, called “The Voice of Lampeter’s Stage”.
Rugby still remains a popular sport in town, with high attendance when Lampeter Town Rugby plays at home. The town also has a leisure centre with gym, meeting hall, swimming pool, bowling green, and tennis facilities.
You won’t find national chain shops in this town. Each store is locally-owned, and the town even has it’s own Theatr Felin-fach and museum. Local train service stopped in 1975, but students and residents can now take one of the regular bus services through town.
