Flower Delivery to Cleveland by Clare Florist

The name Cleveland literally means “cliff land” and it rings true with North East England's Cleveland. The southern part of the area is best described as a hilly region, and it rises to nearly 1,500 feet.

The Cleveland area is very varied when it comes to geography. The Tees estuary is very much industrialised and urbanised. The lowlands – much of it – is farmland. The eastern portion marks the end of the chain of cliffs that runs along the North Yorkshire Heritage Coast. The southern portion of Cleveland is really hilly and forms the escarpment of the North York Moors.

So, if you like a good combination of country and modern life, a visit to Cleveland might interest you.

Historically, Cleveland as a geographic area within the Noth Riding of Yorkshire was located south of the River Tees. The largest of its towns was Guidborough until Middlesbrough rose in the 19th century.

In 1947, a non-metropolitan county of Cleveland was created under the Local Government Act 1972 and was named after the historic region. However, it didn't cover the entire region. It also included the land to the north of the River Tees that had been until then a part of County Durham.

Cleveland, the non-metropolitan county, was based around the Teesside urban area that included Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool and Redcar.

However, the county was abolished in 1996 and its boroughs became unitary authorities. The Tees was re-established as the border between North Yorkshire and County Durham for ceremonial purposes only.

Cleveland has a very important part in industrial heritage as it once played a central role in the 19th century iron boom. This boom led to the growth of Middlesbrough from a hamlet into a major industrial town in only a few decades.

The Cleveland Hills, in the southern portion, was also a key supplier of ironstone that was crucial to running the blast furnaces along River Tees.

Teesport in Middlesbrough still continues to be one of the main posts in the UK. Plus, the area between Middlesbrough and Redcar is still populated by several industrial plants.
