Flower Delivery to Brampton, Cumbria with Clare Florist

A small market town situated in the Cumbria district, Brampton has a humble population of only about 4000. However, contrary to what this may suggest, the town actually has a lot to offer in terms of tourism activities and interesting historical facts.

The town of Brampton was first founded as an Anglian settlement in the 7th century. After having been granted a Market Charter by King Henry III, it eventually evolved to become a market town in 1252.

As with other towns in the City of Carlisle, Brampton has its own history of political involvement. In 1745, during the Jacobite Rising, Bonnie Prince Charlie sought shelter in Brampton. Here, he met the Mayor of Carlisle who was going to admit defeat and yield the city to the Young Pretender. The following year, 6 of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s supporters were captured and hung. This event is memorialised by the Capon Tree Monument now standing outside the town centre.

The Octagonal Moot Hall is another prominent historical structure in the town of Brampton. It was built in 1817 by the Earl of Carlisle and is now home of the town’s Tourist Information Centre. What once stood in its current spot though was a 1648 building that Oliver Cromwell used to keep prisoners.

Much of Brampton actually consists of famed historic buildings. One such is Saint Martin’s Church. The structure grew notable as the only church Pre-Raphaelite architect Philip Webb designed. In its interiors are displayed sets of exquisite stained glass windows beautifully designed by no other than Sir Edward-Burne Jones.

Another important monument that can be found in Brampton is the Hadrian’s Wall. Built by Romans, it stretches 73 miles from Wallsend and reaches the Solway in Northwestern Cumbria.

Culture: Brampton Live Music Festival

Aside from historical sightings though, Brampton is also known for hosting music festivals such as Brampton Live. Since it was first held in 1995, Brampton Live quickly picked up to become the biggest folk/roots/world music event to happen in Northern England. The last Brampton Live Festival happened in 2009. In 2012, it was replaced by Stepping Stones Festival, now held every May at Brampton’s Community Centre.

Parks and Nature Reserves

Lying 2 miles in the southeastern side of Brampton along the Castle Carrock road is the Talkin Tarn Country Park. Here can be found a vista of Brampton flowers, a 65-acre lake and vast stretches of farmland and woodland. To both locals and tourists, the Country Park is the most ideal place for people who simply want to enjoy active recreation and quiet strolls along mature woodlands.

Another spot for a delightful walk and for admiring sightings of flowers in Brampton is in the Gelt Woods. It is located 2 miles south of the town and is situated just near an RSPB nature reserve. A little deeper into the woods can be found a monumental rock with a carving reported to have been made by a Roman soldier back in the 3rd century.

Serving the beautiful town of Brampton is the Brampton railway station on the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway. The station can be found southeast of town, just near Milton village. In the old times, a branch line connected the station and Brampton’s town centre. The line was closed in 1923 though, turning the route into public footpath.
