Eamont Bridge is a small village located in Cumbria, on the upper top western side of England. It was named for a bridge that was built over the River Eamont. On one side of the bridge is Cumberland, and on the other is Westmorland. The village can be reached by the A6 road and the M6 motorway. Nearby villages include Penrith to the north, Yanwath to the west, and Brougham to the east.
The bridge is controlled by traffic lights today. The bridge is a Grade I listed structure, and is one of the oldest bridges in the country which still allows vehicles to drive over it. It’s believed that the bridge was built around the 15th century, but it had expansions in the 19th and 20th centuries.
In 2000, a large boulder was placed overlooking the Eamont Bridge. This is called the Eden Millennium Monument, weighing 50 tonnes, and is inscribed with the letter “A”, the year, and a cross.
In recorded history from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, in July 12th, 927, several kings from throughout Britain gathered here. Apparently this laid the foundation for the Kingdom of England.
There are two ancient sites of historical significance in the village. The first is an earthworks known as King Arthur’s Round Table. Both are listed under the Historic England register. The Round Table is circular, 90 metres in diameter, raised in shape, and is covered in green grass. A cup was found on the site of the Round Table. This site is believed to have been a popular meeting site for centuries.
The second site is the Mayburgh Henge, which is on the rivers Lowther and Eamont. It’s about 400 metres to the west of the Round Table. The gateway to this Henge points towards the King Arthur’s Round Table. The Henge was built from stones from these rivers. This structure was built around 3000 to 4000 years ago. It’s believed it has survived for so long as villagers protected the region from invasion.
There used to be a third ancient site, but the stones were either taken away or have broken down.
One of the village’s buildings still in existence used to be called the “Welcome to Cumberland Inn” but is now simply the “Welcome Inn”.
There is a cave in this region called “Giant’s Cave”. There are several legends and stories surrounding it. Most of them include a giant called Isir, and an evil knight called Tarquin. Apparently Tarquin had imprisoned 64 men in the cave.
The Wannasee Weekend Live Tribute Festival will be held in Penrith in August, not far from Eamont Bridge. There will be 1980s music tribute bands performing at the event. This site also offers camping facilities.
