Great Corby is a small village of over 2100 people, according to the 2011 census. It’s located in the north county of Cumbria, on the north western portion of England. It’s situated beside the eastern side of the River Eden. Wetheral is a village that is directly on the other side of the river. Great Corby shares the civil parish and electoral ward with Geltsdale, and both villages form a part of the city of Carlisle.
Great Corby is a picturesque village with plenty of green trees and grass, and is right beside a wooded canyon. The central part of the village is located beside an gently sloping village green. Corby Bridge, or Wetheral Viaduct, links the railway between Great Corby and Wetheral. The Tyne Valley Line serves the region, and commuters can travel down to Newcastle, or up to Carlisle, which is north of the village. People can take the footpath to the railway station, which follows along the railway viaduct.
During the 1830’s, the Corby Bridge Inn was built to serve the needs of railroad travellers to the region, as well as being a social house for local villagers. It is right beside the station, to the north of the village. This building is now a grade 2 listed building on the heritage site. It’s believed that it’s the oldest railway pub of its type in the entire world. Unfortunately, in 2015, it closed after it was sold to a property developer. Its fate is uncertain at this time.
Great Corby is famous for its Corby Castle. This is a grand old home that used to be owned by the Howard family—Catherine Howard was the fifth wife of Henry VIII. The castle is located on the southwestern side of the village that is close to River Eden, and close to Corby Bridge. It was built by the Salked family in the 13th century out of red sandstone bricks. Lord William Howard purchased the estate in 1611. The castle had a new facade built during 1812 to 1817. Edward Haughey and his family currently own the castle.
Local industry includes a microbrewery that is run from the Old Forge. The village does not have a church anymore. It used to have a Methodist Chapel, that closed in the 1980s, and that building was turned into a residential house. The village does have one primary school.
Local villagers encourage outdoor sports, and play cricket at the Corby Cricket Club. There are two senior and two junior teams, with nearly 100 members.
