Flower Delivery to Bolsover, Derbyshire with Clare Florist
Bolsover is a quiet town located near the district of Chesterfield in Derbyshire. It is most known for its rich history, as encapsulated by the traces of straggling fortifications that still stand surrounding the town. Aside from the splendid views of nature and beautiful flowers in Bolsover, the town also offers a setting that is now very rare to experience in today’s modern world. As directors Robert Carlyle and Kenneth Glenaan worded, Bolsover is a town that ‘has been left in the past’. It is a land that time forgot.
The history of the town’s name remains uncertain to this day. Many speculate though that it was derived from the words, Boll’s Ofer or Bula’s Ofer, which are old English for Boll’s Ridge or Bull’s Ridge, respectively.
In the Domesday Book, the town of Bolsover was recognised but was mentioned as Belesovre. It was described as a property of William Peverel, a noble believed to be an illegitimate child of William the Conqueror. Bolsover was the seat of the Peverel family. It was their haven, consisting of a vast stretch of villans, ploughs, woodland pasture, and 8 acres of meadow.
What’s There to See in Bolsover?
Bolsover Castle
One of the most popular historical sightings in Bolsover is the Bolsover Castle. It was founded way back in the 12th century by the famed Peverel family who also owned the Peveril Castle which stands in Derbyshire.
In 1155 the Bolsover Castle came under royal control and ownership was passed from one noble family to another: from the Ferrer family, to Sir George Talbot, to the Cavendish family. During the Civil War, however, the castle was claimed by the Parliamentarians who let the property fall into ruins.
Today, the castle is being cared for by the English Heritage. It is now considered a Grade I building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. This highlights its national-level importance as a historic building, strictly protected against unauthorised change.
Creswell Crags
Bordering Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in England is the Creswell Crags. It is a huge limestone gorge with features so unique that it was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Also a historical site, Creswell Crags contains caves reported to have been occupied by nomadic groups during the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods. As such, it became a subject of documentaries and television programmes as one of wonders of the Midlands.
Today, Creswell Crags is open for public viewing and has a visitor centre featuring a museum of objects from the historical caves.
Creswell Model Village
Another notable sighting in the town of Bolsover is the Creswell Model Village. Built in 1895, it was designed by architect Percy Houfton to provide the workers of the Colliery Company modern facilities. The Model Village was influenced mainly by garden village principles. It was designed around an oval village green and is made up of houses displaying different decorative roofing styles.
The district of Bolsover offers more than just rich history though. It is home to panoramic views abundant with green landscapes and yellow meadows. With fresh air and town gardens full of Bolsover flowers, nature lovers are sure to enjoy the quiet haven that is the town of Bolsover. Indeed, it is an antique town that sprouts the old soul in travellers.
