Burlescombe is a civil parish and village located in the Mid Devon district of Devon county. This village is found within the southwestern portion of England. It’s population was approximately 900 residents, according to the 2011 census. The ruins of 12th century Canonsleigh Abbey are close to town. The church of St. Marys serves the region. The nearest village is five miles to Wellington in Somerset.
The parish used to be divided into four tithings, including Westleigh, Town Tithing, Appledore, and Ayshford. In 1872, the lord of the manor was Edward Asyhford Sandford, descended from a long line of Ayshfords.
In 1701 Nicholas Ayshford created a trust to send a boy to the nearby Uffculme Free School. This grant has continued today, and the trustees of the Asheford Educational Foundation now provide £300 grants to students over the age of 18 who are residents of Burlescombe, and surrounding regions.
The official parish church is St. Marys. It’s estimated it was built around the time of King Henry VII, approximately 1485 to 1509. The church has an intricately made ancient rood screen, and several monuments to the Asyhford family. This church was restored in 1843. Notable renovations include newly carved oak pews, stained glass windows, and repainted heraldic screen blazonry.
Inside the church are mural monuments to Roger Ayshford, died in 1610, and his wife Elizabeth Ayshford, died in 1635.
Located on Ayshford Manor is the estate, and the Ayshford Chapel of Ease. The manor house is now split into two residences. The main building was built by the Ayshford family around the year 1500. In the 16th and 17 centuries significant additions were made. A parlour wing was likely added by Robert Ayshford before 1610, and plasterwork commissioned by Arthur Ayshford. The building was listed in 1966. Ayshford has been listed in the Domesday book as “Aiseforda”. Records from 1689 show that the Ayshford family was quite wealthy.
The Chapel of Ease was built in the 15th century. It contains a nave and chancel, without a centre aisle. This is one of the larger private chapels in England. This chapel also contains several monuments to the Ayshford family.
The Grand Western Canal was built in this region in 1810. This included many bridges, and culverts. Limestone was sourced locally to build the
canal. The local limestone became popular for building in the 19th century, and much of it was transported by canal and railway to other regions of England.
Burlescombe Railway station used to serve the region but was closed. the Tiverton Parkway railway station opened in 1986 for travellers to and from the village.
