History
The origin of the town of Chudleigh is Saxon, and this is evident as you go around the town. When you look at some of the place names in town, you'll notice that they still bear their Saxon names.
Chudleigh grew in importance after the Norman Conquest. King Edward II granted a charter for an annual fair to the town in 1309.
As the town continued to grow, it became a centre for wool production. However, disaster hit Chudleigh in 1807 when a fire tore down two thirds of the town. Thanks to the main coaching route between Exeter and Plymouth, the town was kept alive. The many ale houses and taverns that opened up also played a part in keeping Chudleigh alive.
