History
The original road in Bourton was steep and a pack horse trial known as Long Lane. It was in the year 1756 when the Wincnaton Turnpike Trust was commissioned to build a road from Milbourne Port. After the Elementary Education Act was introduced in 1870, it led to the construction of the Church of England or National School for Promoting Religious Education. In 1985 the school was destroyed by fire but was reopened after four months.

It was even used to supply canvas to the Royal Navy. It was also were the Mill bombs were made during the war and was reopened in 1933 as a dried milk plant. In 1998, it was closed.
Snape Cottage Plantman’s Garden – this 2/3 acre of a a gently sloping garden has an attractive longhouse which is built in stone during the latter part of the 18th century. It looks lovely with rare and beautiful bulbs and perennials. There is also a wildlife pond with newts and about 61 species of birds. The cottage garden is sprawled on a hillside with underground springs.

Surrounded by earthwork banks and trees, the hillfort can be seen from Sigwells, a plateau that is also rich with archeological findings.
