Pulham is a small village located in Dorset county, in the southwest region of England. It’s located in Blackmore Vale, which is a spacious area of green fields, trees, and rolling hills. This wide valley has many farms, but mostly they’re for dairy farming as the soil is above dry limestone which is problematic for drainage. Pulham generally refers to the eastern and western regions of the village.
Pulham’s closet towns are Sherbonne, which is eleven kilometres away, and Dorchester seven miles away. The village lies within the North Dorset administrative area. The main road in is the B3143. According to the 2011 census, there were 269 residents living here, with 103 households with various types of dwellings.
This village has a mention in the Domesday book of 1086. In the book it spells Pulham as “Poleham". It used to be owned by Cirencester Abbey. This Abbey was not located in Dorset though, it was in Gloucestershire.
The village has gone through some spelling changes throughout the years. It was called “Puleham” in 1130, and “Pullam” in 1212. Apparently Pulham has been in use since 1244.
There are many old buildings still remaining in the village today. The old rectory is still standing and is built of pale yellow stones with two stories, brick chimneys, and a crenellated roof. It’s located on well-tended grounds with flower beds. Priests from the nearby Milton church used to visit the Pulham church, and stay overnight in the priest’s room or “Parvis chamber”, which was accessed by a steep staircase built into the wall.
The Church of Thomas A Becket is still standing today, but is along the village outskirts. It is built of dark brown stones in a Tudor style, with a small footpath leading to the main doors. Each of the windows has stained glass, with one window as a memorial to the Hine family. The church’s main entrance is within a tall rectangular tower. There is a small graveyard to the side, where many of the headstones are now grown over with grass, or long since missing.
In 1870, the Thomas A Becket Church underwent some renovations when the north aisle and the southern sections were rebuilt. The last of four bells in the tower was added in 1884.
The Cannings Court Farm consists of an old stable with stone wall and a loft. This farm is located near the River Lydden. The farm used to be called The Court of the Canons.
