Flower Delivery to Winterborne Whitechurch with Clare Florist

Winterborne Whitechurch is a tiny village of 757 people, and it’s located in central Dorset in southern England. It’s also considered a civil parish and has only 331 households. Whitechurch is also known as Whitchurch. It was named due to an actual winterbourne, which is a stream or river that lays dry throughout the summer heat. To reach the village you must take the A354 road along the flat Dorset Downs, an area of chalk land. The lands are made of mostly chalk.

Winterborne Whitechurch is eight kilometres southwest from Blandford Forum, a market town. Winterborne Whitechurch is located on over 1390 hectares of land, in a valley called the Winterborne Brook. The village is nineteen kilometres from Pool and eighteen kilometres from Dorchester. There is also a village called Winterborne Kingston nearby.

There is evidence of prehistoric human activity in the village. There are seven gravesite barrows remaining, and a dyke called Combs Ditch, all created in prehistoric times. There had been at least five other ones, but they were destroyed by human development. It’s believe the dyke could have been a boundary during the Iron Age and was turned into a defensive barrier during the Roman times. In 1864, one of the barrows was excavated, and they found human remains, a bucket urn, and arrowheads.

The Domesday Book of 1086 lists Winterborne as Wintreborne. During this time it had three households, 1.5 ploughlands, and 2.4 hectares of meadowlands. It was the hundred—administrative county division—of Combsditch. The current lord and tenant-in-chief being Milton Abbey.

The village’s church is St. Mary parish church. Portions of the original church remain, including the chancel around the altar, which has been dated back to 1200. The crossing was built in the 14th century, and the south chapel and the central tower were built in the 15th century. The main building of the church was redone in 1844 by Benjamin Ferrey, who was an English architect who focussed on Gothic Revivals.  He has worked on over seventy churches in England. He also redid the north and south aisles of the church. Prior to 1933, the church actually was located outside its own parish, forming part of Milton Abbas Parish.

The northern part of the village is located within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. These are regions of England that are protected by an environment agency, but unlike a national park don’t have a governing authority.

The village doesn’t have any shops left except a farmer’s shop and a tea room, and it has one primary school. The village does have a village hall for community events and for event rentals.
