Flower Delivery to Bishopbriggs, Dunbartonshire with Clare Florist
Although located just five miles north of the Glasgow city centre, Bishopbriggs is a town that has maintained a unique identity of its own. This East Dunbartonshire town is a thriving community with several recreational facilities and shopping opportunities.
Located on the main A803 road between Glasgow and Kirkintilloch, Bishopbriggs has strong rail and road links. The centre of town is a mixture of modern and Victorian structures. The east portion of Kirkintilloch Road is where the Triangle shopping centre stands while the west side features more traditional shops situated in the ground floors of Victorian tenements. A more pedestrianised area is located at Cross Court with several types of businesses in operation.
HISTORY
The first record of Bishopbriggs in documents was in the Caddre Parish of records of 1655. In that record, the town was said to only have eleven residents during the mid-18th century.
Although there were fears that the village would get swamped by the increased expansion of nearby Glasgow, the town managed to avoid such a scenario.
Bishopbriggs attracted the ironstone and coal mining industry due to the completion of the Forth and Clyde Canal in 1790. Growth, though, remained slow compared to other towns nearby like Springburn.
During the 19th century, the town was a major centre for freestone quarrying, even supplying major projects in Glasgow. In 1907, quarrying was halted due to a fall at Huntershill that resulted in the death of several men.
The early decades of the 20th century saw Bishopbriggs experience a decline in economic activity. After the First World War, manufacturing began to grow. Alternative employment was also provided by engineering firms, as well as the Scottish Wire Rope Company, Trebor Bassett and Blackie and Sons Publishers.
The town was bombed during the Second World Way, but it experienced a boost in population thanks to the large-scale building programmers during the 1950s and 1960s.
