HISTORY
Flaxley was once the site of a Cistercian abbey. The ancient parish was formed from land given by Roger, Earl of Herford (the founder of the abbey) to several monks. The abbey was built on the spot where Roger's father was killed while out hunting.
Belonging to the Forest of Dean which was a major medieval ironworking region, Flaxley became an major industrial centre. In fact, the earliest forge recorded from the parish dates back to the 12th century.

Church of St Mary – built in 1856 and features contrasting red and grey Forest stone. The church has a very rich front made of Painswick stone and its interiors are lavishly decorated.
Flaxley Abbey – a 12th-century abbey that is now a private residence. Notable visitors to the abbey include King John I, King Edward III and Queen Mary of Teck (mother of King George the VI and grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II).
Flaxley School – although it closed down in 1901, it is now used as a community village hall.

It is believed that this is the site where the Dobunni, a Celtic tribe, fought their last battle against the Romans.
