Flower Delivery to Lower Swell with Clare Florist

Lower Swell
is a village and civil parish in the county of Gloucestershire that’s located right at the River Dikler and is around one mile away from the market town of Stow-on-the-Wold. The village has one of the finest natural countrysides in the country, and its relatively untouched beauty makes it easy for you to imagine what life in the area was like in the past. Lower Swell flowers and wild plants grow in the countryside, and you’ll find them interspersed with ancient milestones that have been around for many years. This rural charm makes the village a great destination for a weekend getaway and allows you and your loved ones to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing time.

A History of Lower Swell

The village’s name may raise some eyebrows, but its origins weren’t really puerile of nature. Nobody’s exactly sure where the name “Lower Swell” came from, but one theory suggests that “swell” refers to the spring located in the Abbotswood Estate and is an abbreviated form of “Our Lady's Well”. Another theory points out that “swell” may mean “burning” or “funeral pile”, which is a clue that the area was the burial place of “burnt corpses” of nobles. This is evidenced by the fact that a deep bed of ashes was found when the village’s church was reconstructed.

Either way, the village was already called Lower Swell during the Middle Ages. The oldest buildings in the area were built in the 17th century, although many think that the village was developed earlier than that. In the 1870s, John Marius Wilson included Lower Swell in his “Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales”, mentioning that it covered 1,670 acres and had “a mineral spring and three barrows”. At the time, the village had a population of 449 people and 99 houses.

What to Expect in Modern-Day Lower Swell

As mentioned above, Lower Swell is an excellent choice if you want to relax in a peaceful setting. While you’re in the village, make sure to visit St. Mary’s Church, which was built in the 12th century. The church has gone through several renovations and restorations over the years, although it has retained some of its 12th century work, such as the chancel arch and the doublechamfer string-courses on the east and west ends.

Don’t forget to check out Abbotswood. It’s a Victorian mansion that was built on 1867 and is part of the Lower Swell manor, and it has 55 hectares of both formal gardens and woodland gardens. Explore the area during spring and summer to enjoy the colourful flowers in Lower Swell while admiring the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens, who remodelled the house and the gardens.
