Flower Delivery to Brockley with Clare Florist
Brockley is a district of London, located in the southeast middle portion of Greater London county. It’s a popular travel destination, and perfect for a day trip from many other areas in London, due to its proximity to Brockley and Crofton Park train stations, and connections to other lines in England. The name Brockley means “badger woodland clearing”, as “broc” is the old English word for badger. It’s also thought that “broc” could mean “brook”. Brockley officially became a part of Greater London in 1965.
In the 1800s Brockley was famous for its fruit and vegetable markets, especially its huge Victorian rhubarb, which was fertilized by “night soil”, or fertilizer composted from human waste. Today, there are still a few ancient fruit trees in the local gardens.
The Stone House is one of the oldest houses in this region. It stands on an area called “Halfpenny’s Field”. The house was built by George Gibson the Younger, a member of a family of architects, between 1771 and 1773. He purchased the land the house is on in 1766, and additional acreage in 1768.
The Stone House is listed in the England Heritage Trust of protected buildings. It was built with white bricks and grey limestone from the Crustaceous period of time. One side of a projecting bay window has been reconstructed with smooth finish, and is missing its stone and brick work. The exterior of the home has column porticoes with capitals made of leaves and florets.
The region of Brockley has many green spaces, and expanses of wide open fields. Best areas to visit are Blythe Hill, Brockley Cemetary, Hilly Fields and Ladywell Cemetary which is now a nature preserve. The Brockley Nature Reserve runs from the East London Line to Hatcham Wood, and is run by the London Wildlife Trust.
Hilly Fields has the distinction of being saved from development during the Victorian era in the 1880s to 1890s, which led into a meeting spot for the women’s Suffragette movement in 1907-14. Octavia Hill, one of the founders of the National Trust was one of the parties responsible for preserving Hilly Fields. In 1896, the Fields were converted into the park you see today.
Brockley has their own stone circle, but it’s not from any point in history. It was recently built in 2000 to commemorate the millennium. A group of local artists won a Civic Trust Award in 2004 for the project.
The Hilly Fields Midsummer Fayre is a popular draw for residents and visitors to the region. This year’s fair will be held on June 20th, at the Hilly Fields Crescent. It’s a time to enjoy sweets and savouries, to purchase farm fresh produce, and browse the flea market style stalls. Community organisations set up to bring awareness, and there’s even arts and crafts on offer.
