Flower Delivery to Elephant & Castle with Clare Florist
Elephant & Castle, or The Elephant as it is locally abbreviated, is a major road junction located in Central London. Although the area is – in the proper sense – located in Newington, its proximity to the London underground has led it to be called the Elephant and Castle, which is derived from a local coaching inn.
Whether you want to dine or have fun, there are several options available in The Elephant. Of course, if you want to take a date to a romantic dinner, don't forget to present them with Elephant & Castle flowers to set a really romantic tone.
THE BASICS
The Elephant is comprised of major traffic junctions, which are connected by a short road called Elephant and Castle, which is part of the A3. The Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre is located on the eastern side, between the junctions. The Hannibal House is located above.
To the north is the Metro Central Heights residential block, which is bounded by Newington Causeway and New Kent Road. The Strata – a 43-storey residential block – is located in Walworth Road, south of the shopping centre.
There are two linked London Underground stations to The Elephant – the Northern and Bakerloo lines and a National Rail station served by Southeastern and First Thames Capital Connect.
There are several local buildings located here, including Skipton House, which is part of the Department of Health; Perronet House, an award-winning residential block; a large portion of the London South Bank University campus; the London College of Communication; Ministry of Sound nightclub; and the Metropolitan Tabernacle.
HISTORY
The Elephant was previously known as Newington during the medieval period and was part of rural Surrey.
Its importance emerged following the building of Westminster Bridge in 1751, as well as the improvements to the London Bridge. The construction and enhancement of these structures required by-pass roads which resulted in the area being built-up as part of the metropolis during the late Georgian and Victorian periods.
The area became a well-known shopping area dubbed as “the Piccadilly (Circus) of South London” from 1900-1939.
During World War II, The Elephant was a target for German air raids and suffered through “raging fires.”
Major developments were staged in the area from 1945 to 2000. And today, the area is subject to a redevelopment with a budget of £1.5 billion.
THINGS TO DO
There are several dining and amusement options in The Elephant. You can even take your loved one for a romantic meal here. To set the tone of the meal right, buy some flowers in Elephant & Castle to present to them. If you can't buy flowers, you can always send flowers to Elephant & Castle as well.
Cuming Museum – around a 6-minute walk from the shopping centre and features the collection of the Cuming family.
G. Baldwin & Co – London's oldest and most established apothecary specialising in natural beauty products and remedies.
Electric Elephant – a quirky cafe serving fresh soup, salads, pastries, home-made cakes and sandwiches.
La Bodeguita – a Latin American grocery store, deli and restaurant that is a culinary landmark in the area. If you want home-made Colombian food, this is the place to go.
Cinema Museum – features a collection of posters, films and projections aimed at preserving cinema.
Ministry of Sound – great for clubbing.
