Flower Delivery to Queensway with Clare Florist
Queensway may be more popularly known as Queen’s Road. It’s a busy region, located in the Bayswater area of west London. The Queensway underground station will bring travellers directly to the region, as well as on the Bayswater line. Shopping is a popular activity in this region, with Whiteleys, London’s first ever department store located on Queensway Road. Whiteley’s has had an interesting history over the years, but little more than its original name now remains.
Originally, Whiteley’s was a drapery shop in 1863 located on what was then called Queen’s Road. In 1867 it had expanded to a row of shops encompassing seventeen different departments, and was owned by William Whiteley. In 1890, over 6000 employees were working in all divisions of the business. Workers were housed in dormitories, where they had to obey strict rules, and work sixteen hour shifts. In 1907, one of the owners, William Whiteley was murdered by Cecil Whiteley, his illegitimate son.
A new building was built in 1911. By the 1950s, the business was floundering, and closed in 1981. Reconstruction started in 1986, though very little of the original building remains, except for stairs and railings, and the 1911 facade of the building. Several workers lost their lives when a construction crane collapsed. In 1989 it reopened as a shopping centre. In 2013, the building was bought by its current Brunei family trust owners.
Queensway was originally named Black Lion Lane, and then Queen’s Road, as Queen Victoria has been born at Kensington Palace, which was nearby. It was then renamed as Queensway, as they felt the original name too generic.
Queensway underground station is located directly across from Kensington Palace Gardens. This area of London has some of the most expensive properties in the entire world. Behind the Palace is a large expanse of green parklands. The Royal Parks is responsible for the upkeep of these gardens.
In 1702, Queen Anne made the park in traditional English garden style. In 1728, Queen Caroline transformed the garden into how it looks today. The gardens flow over 242 acres of land. It connects to Hyde Park. In the 18th century the parks were closed to the public, except for Saturdays, when you must have been “respectably dressed”. Today both parks have portions that are open to the public.
The Brunei family has plans to redevelop much of the region, including what is known as the Queensway Estate. Queensway Market is also a popular spot to drop by for leisurely shopping on the weekend. Besides shopping, there are plenty of activities to do here. There is a large entertainment and leisure industry. The largest ice rink in London is located here, The Queen’s Ice & Bowl.
