Russell Square is definitely an escape from the business of the city, and if you want to know more about it and the surrounding areas, here's what you need to know:
History
Named after the surname of the Earls and Dukes of Bedford, Russell Square was established after the 5th Duke laid out new streets on the site of the Bedford House, their former home. The square was home to large terraced houses meant for upper middle class families, a few of which still exist to this day and are mostly located on the southern and western sides.
Russell Square was re-landscaped in 2002 based on the original early 19th-century layout by Humphry Repton. The square is managed by the London Borough of Camden but the freehold of the square remains with the Bedford Estate.
Attractions
The large terraced houses on the southern and western sides. These were made for upper middle class families and make a great stop for those who love architecture. The buildings on the west are occupied by the University of London. One of the buildings on the north-west has a blue plaque commemorating the years T.S. Eliot worked there as a poetry editor for Faber & Faber (that building is now used b the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London).
Hotel Russell. This was built in 1898 and is located on the square's eastern side. Charles Fitzroy Doll designed the structure and many of the builders were associated with the company which made the RMS Titanic.
Russell Square Tube Station. Located about two minutes to the north-east, the station is not far from the main campus of the University of London, the British Museum and the Great Ormond Street Hospital. The station is on the Piccadilly line between Holborn and King's Cross St Pancras. Although small, the station gets rather busy as it's used by workers and tourists staying at the numerous hotels around Bloomsbury or those visiting the British Museum.
