Flower Delivery to Wimbledon with Clare Florist
Wimbledon is an area of London that is known all over the world. While the name is probably primarily known for the annual tennis event that takes place every summer, it is a suburban district with a population of over 60,000 people. Wimbledon is located in the south west of London, and it is found in the borough of Merton. Wimbledon is located to the south of Wandsworth, to the north east of New Malden, to the north west of Mitcham, to the west of Streatham and to the north of Sutton.
The history of people inhabiting Wimbledon can be traced back to the Iron Age when a hill fort on the common was constructed. The Domesday Book, compiled in 1087, lists Wimbledon as being listed as being part of the Mortlake manor. As for the present day Wimbledon, there are two main areas of the region, which are referred to as the village and the town. The High Street of modern day Wimbledon was built on the scene of the medieval village in the area while the town section is the more recent addition. The town section of Wimbledon has been developed over the years, but the genesis of the area started after the railway station was added in 1838.
As with many other parts of London, Wimbledon was absorbed in Greater London in 1965, a location where it is still found today. There are a number of parks and common spaces in the local area but Wimbledon Common is the best known around the world. A large part of this is down to the Wombles, who became a huge phenomenon in the 1970s and 80s in the United Kingdom. The Wombles called Wimbledon Common their home and they were focused on ensuring the area was clean and tidy, recycling many of the items that were left behind on the common.
The Common spans a total of 1,100 acres, which refers to 460 hectares and there are three separately named areas within the overall local area, including Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Lower Commons. Putney Lower Common is separated from the rest of the Common by around 1.5 miles, but it is still considered to be part of the overall common which is run by the Wimbledon and Putney Commons management team.
