Flower Delivery to Woolwich with Clare Florist
Although significantly altered now, Woolwich was once a naval and military town. Situated three miles east of Greenwich, this area is one of the 35 major centres in Greater London as identified in the London Plan.
Woolwich is a river crossing point with the Woolwich Ferry and Woolwich foot tunnel crossing to North Woolwich. This town was the original home of the Woolwich Building Society, a financial institution in the UK owned as a mutual organisation by its members and was demutualised in 1997 and became Woolwich plc and in 2000 was acquired by Barclays.
From its roots as a naval and military town, which ceased in 1994, Woolwich is being touted as the “next big thing” in south London by property consultants thanks to its enhanced transport links, development on the Royal Arsenal site and a nice collection of Georgian terraces.
History
Evidence points to Woolwich being inhabited as early as the Iron Age. A Roman fort was also found in the current Riverside Park.
The area remained to be a small village until it became a leading military and industrial town. During that time, Woolwich was home to the Woolwich Dockyard, the Royal Arsenal, the Royal Military Academy and the Royal Artillery.
Woolwich is also where the English Premier League football club Arsenal was founded in 1886 by workers at the Arsenal. They were originally known as Woolwich Arsenal, but dropped Woolwich when they moved to north London in 1913.
In 1974, Woolwich became the first spot in the UK to have a McDonald's branch. The town was chosen because it was thought to be representative of England at the time.
The town used to have four cinemas, but today some of these were transformed into a bingo hall, a nightclub and a Pentecostal church.
The town experienced a decline in the late 20th century with the closure of the Siemens factory and the scaling back in operations of the Royal Arsenal. However, residential development of the former Royal Arsenal saw the town experience a renaissance.
