Wheathampstead
is a village and civil parish in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England. It is in the Hitchin and Harpenden parliamentary constituency, north of St Albans. The village stands on the River Lea and on the Hertford and Dunstable railway. Known as Watamestede in the Domesday Book, it was the meeting place of the barons against king Edward II in 1312. Wheathampstead stood at about 6,058 at the 2001 census.

Settlement in the area began with the Belgic invaders in about 50BC. They moved up the River Thames and River Lea which now forms part of Belgium today.  Evidence of their settlement was found in Devil’s Dyke, east of Wheathampstead. The Devil’s Dyke earthworks form part of the remains of the ancient settlement of Catuvellauni and is believed to have been the tribe’s original capital. The Devil’s Dyke is believed to be where Cassivellaunus was defeated by Julius Caesar in 54BC. There are suggestioons by some historians that the dyke formed part of the defensive rampart as Beech Bottom Dyke which would, if correct, make the area one of Britain’s largest and most important settlements.

Wheathampstead and Harpenden both formed a single rectory until 1859. Before then, Most of the Wheathampstead and Harpenden rectors after 1238 went on to have successful ecclesiastical careers. Richard Sampson went on to become the Lord President of Wales after holding the position in the 16th century. He was consecrated Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield in 1543. Another rector, Richard Pate was in 1543, consecrated Bishop of Worcester. Henry Killigrew became the Master of the Savoy in 1661. Lambert Osbaldeston was also master of Westminster School and became more famous later for a controversy with Archbishop Laud. In 1639, he was deprived of his living and fined £5,000 over using libelous language. John Lambe, whose father devoted his life to alleviating the suffering of prisoners, also became a rector and later Chaplain in Ordinary to William and Mary. John Wheeldon authored several works and Queen Victoria’s private tutor was also a former rector.

One plaque stating that Caesar defeated Cassivellaunus, the king of the Catuvellauni tribe at Devil’s Dyke in 54BC and the other plaque stating that Devil’s Dyke was handed over to Lord Brocket in 1937 by the Queen. Devil’s Dyke formed a boundary around the settlement formed by the Belgium invaders. The people who lived in the settlement are known as the "Catuvellauni tribe".
