HISTORY
In 1995, a large midden pit at Staosnaig on the east coast of the island was found to have thousands of burnt hazelnut shells. The discovery provided insight into the communal prehistoric activity on the island.
There are a number of ruined hill forts on the island, including Dun Cholla and Dun Meadhonach.
The lairds of the island during the 18th century were the Macneils, including Archibald Macneil. The family built the Colonsay House in 1722 but the house has been in the property of the Barons Strathcona – the island's later owners – since 1904.
Today, the island receives a fair amount of tourists and as such has seen a number of accommodation options pop up.
ATTRACTIONS
Colonsay House – an 18th-century structure famous for the numerous Colonsay flowers you get to see, as well as some hybrid rhododendrons, unusual trees and shrubs sourced form different parts of the world. There is truly no better place to see flowers in Colonsay than at the gardens of this centuries old property.
Kiloran Bay – located 2 miles north east of the Colonsay House. This is the finest sandy beach on the island.
