Flower Delivery to Ludborough with Clare Florist
The village and civil parish of Ludborough is part of the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, near the Prime Meridian. It is home to 760 people and lying approximately 5 miles north of Louth. Humans have inhabited the area since at least the Neolithic era as confirmed by archaeological finds. Crop marks and rectangular enclosures dated to the Iron Age and Roman times have also been located in the area. Other earthworks, fishponds and moats related to settlements up to the Middle Ages have been identified.
Ludborough had 38 freemen listed in the 1086 Domesday Book, and it was considered “very large.” Before the Conquest, Thorgot Lag held the lands. After the Conquest, Berengar of Tosny held the lands and Robert of Tosny was tenant-in-chief and resident in the manor at Binbrook. Henry III granted the then-manor holders the right to hold a market in Ludborough on 4 May 1297.
The Ludborough church is dedicated to St. Mary. Some of the church dates to the 13th century including parts of the chancel. Here, some scrollwork painting on one of the chancel windows can be seen. This is quite rare. The Ludborough Manor House also retains some original features dating back to the 1500s, including a fine ceiling with carved wooden beams. In 1821, the parish population numbered 281, with 45 homes. Part of the church’s south aisle was used as a school. Extensive re-building of the church took place in the mid-1800s, and the church reopened in 1860.
Ludborough’s primary fame comes from its rail station, the base for the heritage Lincolnshire Wolds Railway. This is the only standard gauge steam railway in Lincolnshire. The line is part of the original Great Northern Railway (GNR) that opened in 1848. The line once linked Louth, Grimsby and East Lincolnshire to London. It was completed in 1848 and was the first section of the GNR. In 1923, the GNR became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), which made improvements to the line. Ludborough was the site of a decoy base during WWII to deflect German bombers away from RAF Binbrook. In 1948, after the end of the War, the railway assets were taken into public ownership under the Transport Act and given to British Railways. BR ran the lines from 1948 until they eventually closed in 1970. The rails were lifted and the infrastructure was dismantled completely in 1980.
Preservation efforts started rebuilding the station at Ludborough in 1984. They obtained a Light Railway Order in 1991, authorizing reinstatement of the East Lincolnshire Railway. The first train steamed on the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway in August 2003, and the first train to Ludborough ran again on 26 August 2009.
Ludborough hosts many commemorative events and festivals centered on the railway and the Second World War. History buffs flock here throughout the year to enjoy the unique features of the steam and diesel trains and to learn about the history of the area.
