Lincolnshire is a county located on the mid-Eastern side of England, bordering the coastline. The area encompasses 6,959 square kilometres in area and has over one million people living there. The county is separated into eight different districts. This county borders eight other counties. The county town is Lincoln, which is where the county council operates from.
The county has some varied geography, with the Lincolnshire Wolds to the northeast, and the Fens on the southeast. The Marshes run along the coastline, and the Lincoln Edge or Cliff is a limestone escarpment that exists along the western half of the county.
The county thrives on agriculture, growing vast amounts of wheat, barley, oilseed, rapeseed oil, and sugar beet. The south part of the county is known for growing potatoes, cabbages, onions, and cauliflower.
During the time the Domesday Book was recorded in 1086, this county was called Lindsey. Later, the region of Lincoln was added, and the county started in three parts: Parts of Lindsey—the largest, Parts of Holland—the smallest, and Parts of Kesteven, and assigned with their own county councils in 1888. It wasn’t until 1974 that all three parts were merged into Lincolnshire.
Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1726/7) was born at Woolsthorpe Manor House, founded in the 17th century. He went to The King’s School, where his signature is still preserved on a window sill at the library. The building is now managed by the National Trust.
There are many notable Grade I listed buildings in Lincolnshire, including Belton House in Belton, Grantham, beside a large wooded park, built in the 17th century. Today it’s one of the best-preserved examples of an English country manor. St. Botolph’s Church is located in Boston. It’s notable for having one of the tallest medieval towers in England.
Tattershall Castle is located in Tattershall and is a tall building with four towers and three separate entrances in the front. It was initially built in 1231, with an extensive rebuild from 1430 to 1450. Lord Curzon of Kedleston managed to recover the castle’s fireplaces and restore the castle. He left the castle to the National Trust when he died in 1925.
In 2008, one of the largest earthquakes to affect Britain occurred in Lincolnshire. This was between 4.7 to 5.3 on the Richter magnitude scale.
Many events are held in Lincolnshire each year. The Lincolnshire Agriculture Show happens once a year on the last week in June at Grange de Lings. It’s one of the largest in the country. Stamford hosts the mid-Lent fair with rides and sideshows. The Scarecrow Festival occurs annually in Tetford and Salmonby. The Lincoln Christmas Market is held every year, and the Spalding Flower Parade held late in spring each year.
