Flower Delivery to Tattershall with Clare Florist
Tattershall is a small village of over 2800 people, located in Lincolnshire, in the east midlands portion of England. It’s located in the East Lindsey district, and is also a civil parish. To get there, commuters can take the A153 Horncastle. It’s about 1.6 kilometres from the River Bain. Tattershall Thorpe hamlet is also a part of the same parish.
There are many well-preserved heritage buildings in the village. The Fortesque Arms business dates from the 15th century, and is in a Grade II listed building. There are also many notable historic landmarks in the village. Here you can find Tom Thumb’s gravesite and house.
Tom Thumb was a mythical character from folklore, and his history dates back to 1621, when the History of Tom Thumb was first published. There was also a popular children’s line of books published in the 18th century. If he was to have a final resting spot, it was believed to have been in Tattershall.
Near the font of the local church is a plaque noting his grave. It says that Tom was only 47 centimetres tall, and that he died in 1620 at the age of 101 years. His small house can be seen on the roof of a larger house in the market place.
Near the market place is also the remains of the Tattershall College building. It had been built by Lord Cromwell for the Holy Trinity Church. It was also built in the perpendicular style of Gothic architecture. It was a brewery for a brief time, but now it’s a protected ruin. Modern brick is now used to support the walls.
Tattershall Castle is in a striking red brick building, taller than it is wide. It was built in 1434 by Ralph de Cromwell, who was Henry VI’s Lord High Treasurer. There had previously been an older 13th century stone castle on the site. The Grand Tower and the moat still remain today.
The Holy Trinity Collegiate Church is a perpendicular styled building. It was endowed by de Cromwell, but only built after his death. Building began in 1472 and finished by around 1500. The church has some notable stained glass features, brasses, and a rood loft. The church was restored between 1893 and 1897.
There is an octagonal 15th century buttercross that still stands today. It was built in the 15th century, and is now a Grade I listed structure and scheduled monument. Once a week, a market was held in town. This charter was granted by King John in 1021. In return, he received an annual fee of a trained goshawk.
Today, markets are no longer held here, but the buttercross does remain at the centre of a shopping area. The old railway line was turned into a cycle path in 2008.
