Camden is best known for its market and colourful nightlife. Also, the city is home to King's Cross, St Pancras and Euston – three of the most important railway stations in London.

Long the centre of alternative culture in London, Camden Town does give an unorthodox charm. But despite the unconventional atmosphere, there's a lot to enjoy here such as the variety of restaurants and the awesome live music scene.

A lot of famous people have called Camden home, including Dylan Thomas, Amy Winehouse and Walter Sickert.

HISTORY

Camden Town gets its name from Charles Pratt, 1st Earl of Camden. His estate, Camden Place – which is located near Chislehurst in Kent and now part of the London Borough of Bromley – is where Pratt styled his earldom after. The estate was also formerly owned by William Camden, a historian.

The name Camden Town appears on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1822. Later, it was applied to the early 20th century Camden Town Group of artists, as well as the London Borough of Camden which was created in 1965.

Camden stands on land that was once the manor of Kentish Town. Through marriage, Charles Pratt was able to acquire the manor. He granted leases for the building of houses in the manor in 1791. Regent's Canal was built through the area in 1816.

Although considered an “unfashionable” locality until the mid-20th century, the perception of Camden has changed since. Now, the Camden markets attract a large crowd all week.
