Northamptonshire is a county located in the east midlands region of England. It’s surrounded by many other counties. In 2015, a population of 723,000 people were recorded living in the county. Many people living in the region abbreviate the name to “Northants”.
The coat of arms features a falcon sitting on the to of the arms, with a black bull on the right, and a white stag on the left, both wearing collars. There are three roses and a lock on the arms. The motto for the county is: Rosa Concordia Signum, meaning, rose, a symbol of peace. This is why the county is called “The Rose of the Shires”. Despite the rose being on the coat of arms, the county’s official flower is the cowslip.
Northamptonshire is landlocked, not being on the sea, and is surrounded by many other counties, including Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Rutland, and Warwickshire.
Northampton is the main county town, but other larger cities of the region include Corby, Daventry, Kettering, Rushden, and Wellingborough.
The region of Northampton likely didn’t have any early human occupants in pre-historic times, as few artifacts have been found. It’s believed the first settlement was around the Iron Age, 500 BC. The first peoples of the region were probably the Hallstatt. Remnants of hill forts have been found at Arbury Camp, Borough Hill, Castle Dykes, and more.
Around the 1st century BC, this region became the territory of the Catuvellauni, a Belgic tribe. The Romans then conquered the region in 43 AD. After the Romans left, it became the Kingdom of Mercia. in 889, the Danes conquered the lands, then the Vikings of York arrived in 940.
Rockingham Castle used to be a royal castle and hunting lodge, and it still stands today. It features a gateway between two large towers, and is located in Rockhingham village, to the north of Corby in Northamptonshire. There has been some dispute as to which county it’s actually located in, but if you’re visiting, it doesn’t really matter, it’s within close distance. It was originally built in the 11th century, and remains private and owned by the Saunders Watson family. Perhaps its best known as being a popular haunt of Charles Dickens, who was a good friend of the Watson family. If you check the website, the castle does open to the public on special days.
Flore Gardens is located in the Flore village, and features a mix of garden styles. Visitors can view flowering perennials, shrubs, flowers, bulbs, borders, and greenhouses. This is also the site where the annual Flore Flower Festival is held every year. This attractive village overlooks the Upper Nene Valley. This year they were host to the 55th annual flower festival.
