Flower Delivery to Yoxall with Clare Florist
The village of Yoxall is located in Staffordshire, England. It is situated on the banks of the Swarbourne River on the road north of the city of Lichfield and south west of Burton upon Trent. The Yoxall Bridge cross the River Trent, south of the village. The name Yoxall is believed to have been derived from two Old English words ‘geoc’, which has many meanings which include ‘a yoke of oxen’ or ‘a measure of land’ and ‘halh’ which means a small hollow or valley. The widely accepted meaning of the name is ‘a secluded land area enough to be ploughed by a team of oxen”. Yoxall is recorded in the Domesday book as Locheshale, part of the lands of the bishop of Lichfield which is held by Rauen and Alwin as tenants. The land was large enough for four ploughs. Today many of the buildings in the main street with fronts that are more modern usually have older structures just behind them. One particular one is the Reeve End Cottage which has remains of a 14th century timber built house that had an aisled hall and said to be Staffordshire’s only surviving one.
There were 35 families recorded In Yoxall between 1532 to 1533. By the time of the Hearth Tax assessment of 1666, the households stood at 149 in the constablewick of Yoxall. Yoxall had been a farming community and continued to be so well into the 20th century with many agriculturally related trades located within the village. A Victorian Village shop was removed from its previous location at Hadley Street and re-assembled at the County Museum in Shugborough. A Cottage Hospital, endowed by the Meynell-Ingram family was built in 1873. Some of the past prominent people who had connections with the Village include Mary Arden’s family. She was Shakespeare’s mother and had purchased Longcroft Hall that was later demolished in 1576. Others are Rev Thomas Gisborne, who was a friend of William Wilberforce, who visited the village frequently to see him (Thomas). The father of Izaal Walton the angler, George Walton once lived at Yoxall also.
