Flower Delivery to Blundeston with Clare Florist
Blundeston is a small village located in the eastern portion of England. There are over 1600 villagers located in this civil parish of the Waveney district, in Suffolk county. It’s very close to the North Sea coast, and closest to the villages of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.
The HM Prison Blundeston was located beside the village until 2013, when it closed. John Stonehouse, former Member of Parliament, spent the last two years of his sentence (1978-1979) on fraud charges for faking his own death.
Blundeston has a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086. It’s listed as a small village, with only a few families. Robert of Vaux held the village, and some of surrounding lands.
St. Mary’s Church is located on the edge of a bright green grassy field. It was built during medieval times. An old photograph of the church exists from 1929. The church has a tall narrow round tower, and the roof of the church has sloped ceiling. Ivy is growing up to a third of the tower’s wall. There is a small graveyard in front of the tower. It’s believed that the tower dates from Norman or Saxon times, possibly 11th century, while the nave, or central part of the church, is from the 12th century. Today, the church looks pretty much the same as in the photo. The church is dedicated to St. Mary, and is a listed building on the English Heritage site.
There is an old windmill located at the end of Church Road and Short Road and The Street. It’s no longer in use. The town does have some amenities, including a primary school, a piano gallery where the old fire station used to be, scuba diving business, and the Blundeston Garden Centre where villagers can purchase plants, and flowers for their gardens.
Blundeston does have a Dickens connection, though it is fictional. Charles Dickens wrote the book David Copperfield, and Blundeston was where Copperfield was supposed to have been born. No one knows if Dickens had actually visited Blundeston, but he claimed that he saw the name on a signpost while he was travelling to Great Yarmouth.
In Blundeston you’ll see references to the David Copperfield novel with Copperfield Terrace, and Dickens Court road names. The village has a sign with a painting of Copperfield on it, as he looks towards the church. The primary school uses names from the book for its different grade levels.
David Mayhew, author and illustrator of children’s books was actually brought up in Blundeston until he left for art school. He has written over 50 children’s books, including the Katie series. The village has one cricket club called the Blundeston Cricket Club. They play in the Norfolk Cricket League.
