Budbrooke in History
Budbrooke has been around for hundreds of years. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book, which noted that the area had a population of 42 households (which was quite large at the time), with 12 ploughlands, a meadow, a mill, and some woodland. Earl Edwin as lord in 1066, followed by Ralph of LimÈsy, who became lord and tenant-in-chief in 1086.
Budbrooke also appeared in the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, which was written by John Marius Wilson in the 1870s. Wilson noted that Budbrooke parish had 112 houses and a population of 492 people, with a church, a Roman Catholic chapel, and a school. Budbrooke subdistrict, meanwhile, was composed of nine parishes and had a population of 4,446 people.
The area was hit by the Black Death in 1350, which caused numerous deaths and lead to the decline of the village. Fortunately, the local community has been able to pick itself up and promote economic growth. The Birmingham and Warwick Canal, which was built in the late 1700s, passes through the parish and has contributed to its development over the years. The Budbrooke Barracks, meanwhile, had a huge influence on the area, and the parish’s military connections can be seen in its street names (which have been named after officers and battles).
