Bowling is a village of 5500 people, located in the West Dunbartonshire council area of Scotland. Bowling is derived from the Scots word Bowlin, and Bolan in Scottish Gaelic. Bowling is located on Bowling Harbour, and the Firth of Clyde, between the villages of Clydebank and Dumbarton. The Antonine Wall ends right before Bowling, which signified the limits of the Roman Empire. Bowling has one church, Old Kilpatrick Bowling Church.
The Antonine wall was built of a stone base and turf and timber walls. Today it is covered in plant growth, so it hasn’t survived as well as Hadrian’s wall has. This wall was built by the Romans across the central belt of Scotland. It’s 63 kilometres long, 3 metres high and five metres wide. Most of it has been destroyed over time, but some remains can still be seen. There has been a play done called “The Romans Stopped at Bowling”, about the history of the area.
The Forth and Clyde Canal was opened in 1790 and was the first of its kind to be built in Scotland. It provided a transit solution to the Lowland canals and flows all the way to Glasgow. The canal provided an essential supply link around the west coast of Scotland, and along the Hebrides islands.
Ship building was an important industry of the village, and began in 1790. Thomas MacGill rented a part of the Gravin dock, and he and his sons built vessels here until 1843, when an extension to the Canal was made.
in 1843, another shipyard was opened at Littlemill by George Mills and Charles Wood. Charles Wood left to set up his own shipyard in Dunbarton, while George Mills retired from the industry in 1840/41.
Puffers were coal-fired steam boats that run along the canal. The first one, Thomas, was built in 1856. Thomas MacGill’s sons started up a new shipyard on land that was called Frisky Hall Orchard. They specialized in wood sailing boats, until 1874, when they built their first iron ship. James MacGill continued on by himself and his company made over 450 vessels, including passenger ships. The shipyard closed in 1979. In 2008, the canal was improved with better facilities.
There are many walking and cycling paths along the canal that take the traveller through the beautiful countryside. It’s possible to cycle from one coast to another, in Scotland.
The first railway station opened in 1850, and ran from Dunbarton to Balloch. It no longer runs, but today, the FirstScotRail services still stop at Bowling.
The village has many celebrations throughout the year. Every year in June is the annual Gala Day. One girl is selected to be Queen for a day. This is a ceremony that begins at Bowling Memorial Park, and continues on to Bowling Hall.
