Flower Delivery to Handsworth with Clare Florist
Handsworth is an urban area on the north-west part of Birmingham that's located just outside Birmingham City Centre in the West Midlands. It became widely known for the civil unrest that occurred in the area in 1981, 1985, 1991, and other years. However, it has also become popular in the music world since it has produced many successful singers and musicians who went on to conquer audiences around the UK and even in other countries.
The name “Handsworth” is believed to have come two words: “Hondes”, the name of the area's Saxon owner, and “weorthing”, which is Old English for “farm” or “estate”. It was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book as part of the Offlow hundred, with 10 households, two ploughlands, a two-acre meadow, and a mill.
Handsworth was a small village from the 1200s to the 1700s, until the Soho Manufactory began its operation. Soho Manufactory, which was owned by Matthew Boulton and John Fothergill, produced different goods including buttons and buckles, and it attracted numerous workers.
The influx of factory workers caused Handsworth's population to grow. More than 6,000 people lived in the area in the 1850s, and this grew to 32,000 residents in 1881 and over 68,000 people in 1911. These figures further grew during World War II, when West Indians arrived to work in the munitions factories in Birmingham, and after the war, when Caribbean people were recruited to help with the post-war rebuilding programme.
Handsworth is known nowadays as an urban area that has a rich cultural diversity. It has given birth to influential singers and musicians (such as Joan Armatrading, Jaki Graham, Apache Indian, Webster Booth, Jamelia, and Carl Palmer) as well as popular groups like Musical Youth and Steel Pulse (who named their album “Handsworth Revolution” after the area).
Handsworth has also become known for its fun and exciting festivals. If you time your visit right, you might be able to catch the Birmingham International Carnival, which takes place every August and starts with a procession from Soho Road in Handsworth to Perry Park in Perry Barr. You can also catch the Birmingham Tattoo, which was originally called the Handsworth Tattoo and held in Handsworth Park. It's now held at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham City Centre and features military bands, parades, and other events.
While you're in the area, you can explore Handsworth Park, which blooms with colourful Handsworth flowers in the spring and features a small pond and a larger boating lake. It's home to a diverse set of wildlife, so you can spend a quiet afternoon observing the local fauna while taking a gentle stroll on the landscaped slopes. Don't forget to visit St Michael’s Church, a Grade II listed church in St Michael’s Road, Handsworth. Built in 1851 to accommodate the local factory workers, it's large enough to seat one thousand people and has become a major landmark in the area.
