Flower Delivery to West Bromwich with Clare Florist
The Latin motto which roughly translates to “work conquers all” is featured in the coat of arms of the town of West Bromwich . Located within the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell, the town is just five miles north-west of Birmingham on the A41 London-to-Birkenhead road.
English novelist, playwright and broadcaster J.B. Priestly wrote in “English Journey”:
"I would rather spend a holiday in Tuscany than in the Black Country, but if I were compelled to chose between living in West Bromwich or Florence, I would make straight for West Bromwich."
HISTORY
The first mention of West Bromwich was in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Bromwic, which meant “broom village.” A Benedictine priory existed in West Bromwich from the 12th century, and it is around where the settlement of Brommwich Heath grew. The town became a stop between London and Shrewsbury in 1727, and this contributed to its growth.
By the 19th century, coal deposits were discovered which resulted in the rise of the town as an industrial centre. Not only that, it also had spring, gun and nail-making industries.
West Bromwich became a county borough in 1888, incorporating the village of Great Barr.
The town suffered greatly from the cholera epidemic of 1831.
West Bromwich suffered damages during World War II when air raids were conducted.
