HISTORY

Earnley is located in the hundred of La Manwode or Manwood, which is now called Manhood. The name was derived after a locality in the parish that served as meeting place for the hundred moot and other businesses.

The medieval lords of the manor in the village belonged to the Ernle, Ernley or Erneley family. They were granted the manor by their kinfolk, the de Lancinges family, in 1166. The family then derived their surname from the name of the manor which was held in this parish.
